Biblical View on Church Membership
Bishop Josephat W. Mukemi | 18 September 2022
Today's message is about the biblical view on church membership. As Christians, we are called to be part of the body of Christ and to live in community with one another. Church membership is an important part of that community and helps us to grow in our faith and serve one another.
The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14, "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many." This passage reminds us that we are all part of the same body of Christ and that we need each other to grow and serve effectively.
Being a member of a local church is a practical way to live out this biblical truth. Church membership involves committing to a specific community of believers and actively participating in the life of the church. It includes attending worship services, serving in ministry, giving financially, and being accountable to one another.
Church membership also provides opportunities for spiritual growth and discipleship. Through small groups, Bible studies, and other programs, we can learn from and support one another in our walk with Christ.
However, church membership is not just a practical matter; it is also a spiritual one. Through membership, we publicly declare our commitment to Christ and His body. It is a way to express our faith and obedience to God's Word.
In conclusion, church membership is a biblical concept that helps us to live out our faith in community with one another. Let us be committed to the local church and to one another as we seek to serve and glorify God.
May God bless you and keep you always.
Amen.
